Fiber optic based communication is the fundamental transmission technology in today's global networks ranging from short reach fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) to ultra-long-haul submarine trans-oceanic links. The course covers the fundamentals of optical communications and the required optical and electronic components as well as the optical communication channel based on a system-oriented view. It will familiarize the students with state-of-the-art principles of optical communications technology.

Optical Transmission Channel: Fiber attenuation and dispersion, optical signals in single mode fiber, types of single mode fiber, system model of single mode fiber, polarization and polarization mode dispersion, nonlinearity of fiber transmission and numerical solutions, impact on digital signal transmission, split-step Fourier method, propagation modes in fibers, characteristics of multimode fiber
Optical Transmitters: Characterization of semiconductor lasers, materials, energy-band diagram, guidance of the laser beam, design of lasers, Fabry-Perrot resonator, lasing condition, single mode lasers, rate equations, power-current-characteristics, direct modulation of lasers, laser-chirp, small-signal analysis, laser-frequency response
Optical Modulators: External modulators, electro-absorption-modulator (EAM), Mach-Zehnder-modulators (MZM) for digital QAM-modulation, MZM model and characteristics
Optical Receivers: Block diagram and model, photodiodes, noise performance, clock and data recovery
Optical Amplifiers: Working principle, main characteristics, noise performance.
Optical Filters: Applications, fiber Bragg gratings, delay line filters, transfer functions
Optical Transmission Systems: System design, modulation formats, examples for typical applications
